To those of you who know me well, you know I
don't blog that often, if ever. Today I have an
occasion to share some exciting news !
I have been cast as RUTH in the play BLITHE
SPIRIT, by Noel Coward, a British farce set in
the 1940s. (Performances in October, 2008...more
info on that to come.) This will be my first time
back in a live stage performance since I did THE
MUSIC MAN with the Worthington Community Theater
two years ago.
So far we've had our first read-thru and blocking
for each Act. Turns out I'm a bit rusty...the
director keeps telling me to be louder (and it's
a SMALL theatre space). Hey, cut me some
slack...I've been doing film the last couple
years. I'm used to being on a mic all the time.
Anyway, I was somewhat familiar with the show, as
I saw it performed way-back-when during my days
at Ohio Festival Theatre (see link to my
resume). "Blithe Spirit" is Noel Coward's smash
hit comedy about the spirit of an author's
deceased wife, Elvira, returning to live with
him, much to the dismay of his current wife,
Ruth. Can Charles Condomine choose which wife he
would prefer to keep, or can he live as
an "astral" bigamist in 1940's England? ....It's
a hilarious romp.
So, I decided, what the hell, I'll audition. It
was only a cold read, which I prefer (I detest
doing monologues...ugh), and after reading the
part of RUTH several times, a seemingly prominent
character with lots of dialogue, I was thrilled
when I was cast in the role ! Turns out, of all
the female characters in the show, she's on stage
the most. Sweeet ! It's been a LONG time since
I've had the privilege to play a principal role.
It feels good....and a little scary. More
pressure to be outstanding, you know. But, these
are the challenges that proctor growth, yes?
Anyway, I'm having great fun in rehearsals thus
far. I'll try to keep you all updated about when
we open.
